Can Your Home Theater Do This?

For as much as we love movies and music, we’ve never invested a whole lot in our entertainment system. We still use the cheap pair of speakers that came with the first discount CD player I bought like 15 years ago. And they’re connected to an analog receiver that wouldn’t know what DTS or THX meant even if you spelled them out nice and slow.

That’s not to say that watching movies at our place can’t be exhilarating.

Tonight, for example, we were watching Millions, a film that has quickly become one of my favorite Christmas movies. In one of the climactic scenes, a train hurtles across the screen, rumbling and shrieking. It was so terrifyingly real that we could almost feel the room shake under the power of the railed behemoth. Truth be told, it felt like it shook the whole apartment.

So you can keep your tricked-out digital thingamawoofers and your fancy 6.1 speaker systems....

Our 3.7 is about all the excitement we can handle.
