Ch-Ch-Changes

So far in 2006, I haven’t had a whole lot of writing mojo. I’m getting busier, I’m rethinking how I want to use this site, and frankly, I’m a little tired.

When I realized that I was going to have trouble putting posts together this week, I decided to do a little tinkering behind the scenes to spruce the place up a bit. I’ve upgraded to WordPress 2.0 and I’ve incorporated a few new features. I’ve actually been itching to do a complete redesign, but I know I don’t have the time for that.

“What the sam hill are those things?”

One of the features I’ve added should allow me to add content to the site without feeling the pressure of writing a full post. If you’ve visited in the last day or so, you might have noticed that a few miniposts have appeared at the top of the page. For lack of a better term, I’m calling those “Asides.” They’re intended to be quick thoughts or quick links to things I’ve read that I thought were interesting but didn’t feel like writing at length about. For now, I’ve set them up to list the most current three at the top of the page, then intersperse groups of three in between each subsequent post. As I add more, you’ll see what I mean. As with the full posts, you will be able to leave a Ripple, so feel free to chime in.

Also, keep in mind that I have a fairly dry sense of humor, so you’ll never know when one of those links will turn out to be funnier than I’m letting on. Case in point: that first one about Judge Alito. Funnier than advertised. Trust me.

“Holy crap, that’s a lot of tags!”

The other major change I’ve made is that I’ve done away with the Categories and I’ve replaced them with Tags. I haven’t hooked them up to Technorati or anything for now, they’re just tags for organization within this site. To that end, you’ll notice a few new sidebar items: lists of tags by popularity or by name, a tag archive page with RSS feeds, and an experimental tag search page.

I’ve also retrotagged most of the site. I did it pretty quickly and haphazardly, so I ended up with a pretty hefty list of tags. I’ll probably streamline that a bit in the future, but for now, it serves kind of like an index to what I’ve written.

I’m not giddy about how everything’s been styled, but it’ll have to do until I have more time.

Well, that’s more than enough inside baseball for now. Maybe I’ll get the itch to write something later this weekend.

Maybe.
