Friday Free Five
Let’s do something a little different this Friday.
I like the Friday Random 10. I really do. It’s easy, it’s kinda fun, and, well, it’s easy.
But this week, I thought I’d give you a little more than just a tiny glimpse into what I’ve been listening to. Instead, I thought I’d offer the chance to listen along. So here are links to mp3s of five songs that gotten some play in the ol’ zalmPod this week.
Enjoy.
- For Real — Okkervil River
- Over and Over Again (Lost & Found) — Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
- One with the Freaks — The Notwist
- Your Ever Changing Moods — Summer at Shatter Creek
- Manhattan Skyline (Live) — Kings of Convenience
Yes, that last one is an a-ha cover.
I’ve also been listening a lot to The New Pornographers’ latest disc, Twin Cinema. Radio Indie Pop is streaming the complete album as their “Album of the Month.” If you’re in the mood for some infectious power pop, hop on over and check it out.
UPDATE: Hot damn! Sigur Rós just posted a legal stream of the new album. Head on over and give it a few listens, so that when I get all effusive about it next week, you’ll know what the hell I’m gushing about. Oh, and there’s an NPR webcast on Sunday at 9:00pm eastern of their concert in Baltimore.
One more note: The links above are direct links to the mp3 files. As I am not hosting the files myself, I cannot promise that the links will work forever. Also, out of respect for the bandwidth of the sites I’ve linked to, I’d recommend that you download the files, rather than streaming them.
4 Ripples from “Friday Free Five”

Now you’re the uber hipster! It’s about time one of you Friday Five (and Ten) addicts posted some samples so the poor unwashed masses could bask in your… something or other.
The vocalist on that Clap Your Hands… track has a serious David Byrne thing goin’ on.
Thank you!

So, will Black Sheep Boy make it to the Top Albums of 2005 page?

Jim - I won’t be able to manage a Friday Free Five every week, but I’ll try to do it more often, if only because I’ve now know that I’ve got a baskable something or other.
Good call on Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. I read an interview with the lead singer where he denied that the Talking Heads had any influence on their sound. Maybe it’s true, but it’s really hard not to hear it. Personally, I think it’s great. They’re still doing their own thing, but the Byrnesian overtones certainly don’t hurt.

Scott - I actually don’t have the disc (it’s ordered and should be here next week) so I don’t have a grasp on the full story yet. But now that I’m acclimated to Sheff’s voice, I’m ready for it. The songs that I’ve heard so far ("For Real” in particular) are quite moving. I’m sure it’ll make the list, but I’m going to have to explore it more before I can say how high it will go. Props to you for the recommendation, though. I think this is one I’m really going to like. Thanks.

You are right. Clap… is truly original and I liked the song very much. The “Byrnesian overtones” just add to the novelty. And Mr. Lead Singer (sorry, I didn’t have time to click over and get his name) maybe isn’t influenced by the Heads, it’s just that he sounds an awful lot like David (a little younger maybe). Many people have told me that I look like Byrne, but I don’t write music like him!
Anyway it was my personal favorite of the clips you posted. I may even (!!!!) pick up the disc. Woah.
Have fun basking.
