Friday Random 10 (Palisades! Palisades! Edition)

So it’s my friend’s birthday tomorrow. And his family got together and gifted him with a sleek new nano and a sizable iTunes gift certificate.

That’s my kinda family!

Because I’m nothing if not a freakishly overboard iPod+iTunes enabler, I told him I’d whip up a few recommendations for him to check out and enjoy. It’s Friday and all, so I thought I’d keep it to ten.

Since the birthday weekend apparently involves camping in the Palisades, starting with “Predatory Wasp” was pretty much obligatory. And Andrew Bird’s “The Happy Birthday Song” felt right, too. The rest kinda filled in the gaps from there.

  1. The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades Is Out to Get Us! - Sufjan Stevens
  2. He Lays in the Reins - Iron & Wine / Calexico
  3. The Bleeding Heart Show - The New Pornographers
  4. Neighborhood #3 (Power Out) - The Arcade Fire
  5. Soul Meets Body - Death Cab for Cutie
  6. Arc of Time (Time Code) - Bright Eyes
  7. Mushaboom - Feist
  8. Float - Erin McKeown
  9. The Happy Birthday Song - Andrew Bird
  10. Hoppípolla - Sigur Rós

For your downloading convenience, it’s up on the iTunes Music Store as an iMix.

Happy birthday.

Sorry ‘bout that.  You need iTunes for that link.  I’d be willing to bet that the parents’ computer doesn’t have iTunes.

Just listening to that arcade fire song.  I like “wake up” too.

Wow...are these my 15 minutes of fame?  Many thanks for the recommendations and the birthday wishes.  The Palisades trip turned out quite well, and I did listen to the Predatory Wasp several times--and enjoyed it very much, as naturally I would.

I didn’t have that iMix link either, at least not on the first computer I read this from (this was last night, when we got back to the east coast of the state--if you consider the Mississippi River one of the coasts)...and that computer does have iTunes.  For a minute, I was wondering if “elitist” was the word I wasn’t seeing.  But on this computer it works fine.

Anyway, I’m still getting the hang of playlists and synching, but here’s a random 10 of the 550 that the new nano currently has onboard:

1.  Break Your Heart - Barenaked Ladies
2.  Twilight - Shawn Colvin
3.  Shadowdance - Harrod and Funck
4.  A Quick One While He’s Away - The Who
5.  Concrete & Clay - Unit 4 + 2 (Two songs in a row from the same disc, out of a pool of 550?  I guess I listen to that a lot, right?)
6.  Make Someone Happy - Jimmy Durante
7.  75 Grains of Sand - Sarah Masen
8.  World Leader Pretend - R.E.M.
9.  The Dingle Set—Dance - The Chieftains
10.  Shades of Gray - Cry Cry Cry

Not bad.
