Gonna Walk Around and Drink Some More

I’m still pretty pissed off and disillusioned by the vote yesterday. I’m sure I’ll have more to say about it this weekend.

I went for a few walks today, to try to clear my head. And I spent most of the day listening to Sigur Rós. I honestly don’t know what I’d do without them. There’s just something about their grand, sweeping, guttural cry that helps to ground me emotionally.

After work, I grabbed a few pints with some friends from church. For my part, I enjoyed North Coast Brewing Company’s Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout from a nitro tap. I’m only occasionally in the mood for stout, but this was outstanding. I’d had it from the bottle before, but that doesn’t remotely do it justice.

When I got home, I discovered an advance stream of an album I’ve been looking forward to — The Hold Steady’s ”Boys and Girls in America.” (Although I can’t say that I would’ve picked that font.) Until I’m able to work my way through the lyrics, I won’t be able to say whether this is as strong as last year’s “Separation Sunday,” but so far, this might just be the best rock album I’ve heard this year.

Ok, Separation Sunday is on Emusic.  I thought Boy’s and Girls in America was too, but it appears to only be one song.  Maybe later.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Keep the faith.  I was listening to another of your suggestions this morning--Mark Erelli.

I will not be shamed into silence by partisan thunder
And I won’t fall in line and march to the drums on the wind

Peace.

The song ‘O Fridur’ does that for me more than any other Sigur Ros tune.  I have a feeling the music of heaven will be similar to their stuff.

Streak If you download the album, you may have to give it some time. It took several listens for Craig’s voice to grow on me.

Kevin That’s a nice find… thanks for sharing.

timmer I finally picked up the EP two weeks ago, so I’ve been listening to “ Fridur” a lot lately, but I’m not sure it would even crack my top ten. I’m with you though, on the heaven part. My favorite line written about their last album came from Andy Whitman:

If the cherubim form garage bands (and one can only hope they do), then surely this must be the sound they make.

Man, Old Rasputin Russian Imperial is a truly great beer. One of my faves of 2005. Sounds like the nitro tap took it to another galaxy. Where did you get it? That might be worth a special drive sometime when I’m in the bay area.

I got it at Jupiter, which is just across the street from the Downtown Berkeley BART station.  It’s possible that it’s on a rotation, but it’s been there on my last few visits.
