In Which I Confess to Being Absolutely Powerless to Resist Songs from iPod Ads
Most of the time, I mute the television during commercials.
Most of the time.
You see, I have this irrepressible weakness for iPod ads. Just the sight of a dancing silhouette is enough to make my world stop for 30 seconds. Seriously, there’s someone at TBWA/ChiatDay who has a freakishly mystical power over me that I truly hope they will only use for good.
And once those songs get their hooks in me, it’s only a matter of time before I’m slapping my dollar on the counter of the iTunes Music Store for another fix.
Off the top of my head, I’ve been sucked into buying:
The Caesars - ”Jerk It Out”
Gorillaz - ”Feel Good Inc”
Steriogram - ”Walkie Talkie Man”
Bent Fabric - ”Jukebox”
The Resource feat. Jimmy Napes - ”Gimme That” (iPod nano ad)
I’m sure there are others that I’m forgetting.
In fact, it’s gotten so bad, I actually bought an Eminem track today. I realize I’m a little late on ”Lose Yourself,” and that being able to party like it’s 2002 is nothing to get too worked up over. But the truth is, the most recent iTunes/ iPod ad is just so damn beautiful, I can’t turn away.
Unfortunately, this ad also seems to be a bit controversial. And for once, it’s not Eminem that’s the controversial part. It turns out that the silhouette against a distressed urban orange background looks a lot like an ad Psyop created for Lugz shoes. Coincidence or copycat? It’s hard for me to know. I will say, however, that the Lugz ad is plenty gorgeous in its own right.
It just doesn’t make me want to buy shoes.
Yet.
You can find a decent collection of iPod commercials and other Apple videos here.

Lose Yourself? Eminem? You’re right. You’ve got a serious jones. Get help before it’s too late.

I know exactly how you feel. I’m certainly not an Eminem fan, but I love that commercial.
And you can’t leave out “Are You Gonna Be My Girl?” by Jet. It’s the earliest of the “silhouette ads” that I can recall. Totally rocks.

Uh oh.
That’s that “1, 2, 3, take your hand and come with me” song, isn’t it? I’d forgotten about that one.
Must… Resist…
