Red Red Wine You Give Me Whole Heap of Zing
I suppose this is information that would’ve been more useful before yesterday’s feasting commenced....
Researchers at Harvard Medical School have come closer to demonstrating that red wine can offset negative effects of a high-calorie diet.
When lab rats were given doses of reservatrol, a natural substance found in the skin of grapes and in red wine, they were less prone to diabetes than other rats who ate a similarly high-caloric diet. Reservatrol also extended the life span of the rats to match that of rats who ate healthier diets.
Sounds great, right? Well, you better like red wine:
The mice were fed a hefty dose of resveratrol, 24 milligrams per kilogram of body weight. Red wine has about 1.5 to 3 milligrams of resveratrol per liter, so a 150-lb person would need to drink 750 to 1,500 bottles of red wine a day to get such a dose.
Okay, so maybe “useful” wasn’t exactly the word I was looking for.
