Stepping Up to the Plate
Jeff Sharlet, who authored the article that was a catalyst for my previous two posts, stopped by the site today. Unfortunately, he took my first post to be a bit of an attack on his article, which was by no means my intent.
In my reply to his comment, I quoted something that Jeff had written on The Revealer, the NYU publication for which he serves as Editor:
It’s not the Ted Haggards of America who scare me. It’s the ordinary Christians, good and thoughtful people, who cringe at the power being seized in their names and yet remain silent, unwilling to challenge those who invoke Christ’s name for the sake of influence.
As I explained to Jeff in my reply, one of the main reasons I began this site was because I could no longer bear to be a quiet cringer. I hoped that this would give me an outlet to explore the relationship between religion and politics and work through the frustrations, anger and fear I have over some worrisome recent trends in the American church.
But strangely enough, in the three months or so I’ve been writing, I’ve only written about these topics obliquely. Which is almost as bad as quietly cringing. So perhaps it’s time I stopped talking about it and actually, you know, wrote something.
I’m on it.
