The Joylessness of Sox

Thus endeth a great 12 months for Red Sox fans.

It’s strange… whereas in previous seasons, I’ve lived and died by these guys, this season was different. I never felt the gutwrenching urgency I used to feel. Until this game, that is.

I really got into tonight’s game. When you’ve got a rally cap on and you’re standing up screaming while watching a game that ended three hours ago, you know you’re at least a little swept up in it all.

But the season was over after the sixth inning. You could just feel it. That was one of the biggest, longest, most tense innings I’ve watched in a long, long time. And in the end, El Duque was just too good. The bastard.

The White Sox are playing all kinds of great right now. They’re talented and lucky and hot. And you need all of those things to do well in the postseason.

Sometime next week, I’ll go get out my White Sox hat. As bummed as I am right now, I’m actually already looking forward to cheering for them.

Except El Duque. I hate that guy.

That 6th inning was amazing.

Don’t pin your allegiance to the White Sox, Zalm.  Just a friendly warning from a casual reader.  Nothing good will come of that.

Yeah, Chicago as a sports’ city has let me down since MJ retired for the second time.

Good gracious, is it nearly 20 years since Da Bears made it all the way? The Monsters of the Midway and Michael Jordan were Chicago anomolies. Look for your championship, but do not trust to hope. It has forsaken that land.

Yep.  The Super Bowl Shuffle is 20 years old.  And, I might add, the Patriots have won three championships since getting pounded by Sweetness and the punky QB known as McMahon.

Let’s be fair, though.  When a team wins 6 championships like the Bulls in the 90s, that’s not an anomaly, that’s a dynasty.  No city with a run like that has much to complain about.

Okay, I admit I was wrong.

Yah!!! Downtown is going to be fun tomorrow.

The World Series will start in Chicago on Saturday.

No, really, it will.

Wow.

I wonder how many people outside of Chicago really understand the gravity of that situation.

Not many, I’m afraid.

But when the Apocalypse happens just as LaMarr Hoyt is rearing back to throw out Saturday’s ceremonial first pitch, I bet they’ll kick themselves for not picking up a Sun Times every now and then.

At the very least, they’ll regret not tearing up while watching Field of Dreams.

I don’t like baseball very much, but I’m getting pretty excited about this. I don’t see myself actually getting to one of the games, but methinks being downtown in a bar next week will be quite an event in and of itself. I’m really torn, though, since there’s also an Accident Experiment show Saturday that I really want to go to. Sigh. Decisions.

Two down, two to go.

Make that three down… If all baseball were this exciting, and if all baseball included such success by Chicago teams, I’d be watching a lot more of it.

For as giddy as I was at the time, last year’s Series was pretty anticlimactic.

This year’s Series is shaping up to be anticlimactic, but in a really dramatic way.

I just looked at the box score.  El Duque pitched one scoreless inning while walking four.  That’s quite a feat.
